Fillers Q & A

What are fillers?

Fillers are non-surgical cosmetic injections that smooth out facial lines, restore lost volume, and enhance your natural features.

The cosmetic dermatology experts at Knipe Dermatology offer many in-office beauty treatments to restore a youthful look. For your filler injections, they use the Juvéderm® and Restylane® line of dermal fillers.

These fillers contain a hyaluronic acid gel. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in your skin that helps retain moisture and keeps your skin taut and plump.

How do fillers work?

Fillers restore volume loss in your skin. As you get older, your skin thins because of a decrease in collagen and elastin production. Additionally, subcutaneous fat under your skin diminishes with age.

These structural changes lead to skin laxity and sagging, resulting in the development of facial lines and creases.

The gel-like fillers add volume under your skin to:

  • Smooth-out lines and creases
  • Soften furrows and wrinkles
  • Lift and enhance cheeks
  • Plump up thin lips
  • Fill in acne scars
  • Improve facial symmetry

The beauty experts at Knipe Dermatology use various types of fillers and other wrinkle reduction treatments, like Botox®, to help you meet your beauty goals.

What happens during treatment with fillers?

The providers at Knipe Dermatology perform your filler injections at the office.

Before your session, they conduct a consultation to review your beauty goals and examine your skin. Then, they create your personalized filler injection treatment plan.

During a fillers treatment, your provider first cleanses your skin with an antiseptic agent and may apply a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort during your injections. Then, they carefully inject the filler into specific areas of your face to get the desired look.

Filler injections take less than an hour, and the results are immediate. You may notice some redness at the injection site, but these side effects resolve quickly.

There’s no downtime following filler injections. But your provider at Knipe Dermatology may recommend you skip strenuous exercise for a day or two to reduce the risk of bruising.

How long do fillers last?

Your fillers may last anywhere from six months to a year or more. The length of your beauty treatment depends on the type of fillers used.

Your beauty expert at Knipe Dermatology recommends you return to the office to repeat your filler injections once your lines and creases return.
